On August 20, 2024, heavy rainfall and water released from upstream in India caused severe flooding in Bangladesh, impacting several districts including Feni, Noakhali, Comilla, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria, Cox's Bazar, Khagrachhari, Chattogram, Habiganj, and Moulvibazar. The floods swept through homes, fields, and lives, resulting in widespread devastation.
By August 23, 2024, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief reported that 4.5 million people across 77 upazilas in 11 districts were affected. The scale of the disaster is staggering: approximately 193,864 people sought refuge in 3,170 shelters after their homes were submerged or destroyed. Additionally, 17,848 livestock, crucial to their livelihoods, have also been displaced.
In just a few days, 13 lives were tragically lost, including two women. Families in Cumilla, Feni, Chattogram, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur, and Cox’s Bazar now mourn the loss of their loved ones. Thousands of families have been uprooted, their homes and belongings reduced to debris. The once fertile land with crops is now a barren, waterlogged expanse. Roads, bridges, and schools are either underwater or completely destroyed.
The military has been deployed to assist in rescue operations and distribute food in the hardest-hit areas like Comilla, Feni, and Khagrachhari. But the scale of the disaster is overwhelming, and the need for relief far exceeds the resources available.
As a non-profit organization, Shapla Foundation is dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable in Bangladesh—its children. Today, we are extending our efforts to help the millions affected by these devastating floods. Your support can make an immediate and tangible difference in their lives.
A donation to Shapla Foundation will help provide essential relief supplies such as clean water, food, clothing, and medicine to those in desperate need. With many areas still submerged, access to clean water is critical to preventing the spread of disease. Your contribution will help us distribute these supplies swiftly and efficiently.
The floods have destroyed countless homes and schools, leaving families and children without shelter or a place to learn. Your generosity will enable us to rebuild homes and schools, offering a sense of security and normalcy to those who have lost everything.
Thousands of families are now living in temporary shelters with little more than the clothes on their backs. We aim to provide them with the resources they need to rebuild their lives, including cooking utensils, bedding, and other essential household items.
The road to recovery will be long and challenging. Beyond immediate relief, Shapla Foundation is committed to supporting the affected communities in the months and years ahead. Your donations will help fund long-term recovery projects, such as rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring that children can return to school.
