Good hygiene often begins with something as simple as washing our hands. Like every year, our sponsored children at Shapla Foundation recently celebrated Global Handwashing Day through an awareness and learning session focused on one of the simplest yet most important habits for staying healthy.
For many of our children, maintaining proper hygiene is not always easy. They grow up in crowded communities where access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and a hygienic environment can be limited. In such surroundings, habits like washing hands properly before eating or after using the toilet may not always receive the attention they deserve.
That is why we make an effort to organize this program every year.
Our goal is not simply to tell children to “wash their hands.” We want them to understand why it matters and how this small habit can protect them and the people around them. During the session, the children learned about the different situations when handwashing is especially important, such as before eating, after using the toilet, after playing outside, and after coming into contact with dirt or other potentially harmful substances.
We also talked about what can happen when hands are not washed properly. Germs can easily spread from our hands to our food, faces, and other people. Poor hand hygiene can increase the risk of illnesses such as diarrhea, stomach infections, respiratory infections, and other communicable diseases.
For us, the most important part of this program is helping the children turn knowledge into a habit. We want every child to understand that keeping their hands clean is not just something they do during a program, it is something they can practice every day.
We also hope that the children will share what they learn with their families, siblings, and friends. When one child develops a healthy habit, it can influence an entire household.
At Shapla Foundation, we believe education is not limited to school subjects. Teaching children how to protect their health, care for themselves, and make informed choices is also an important part of helping them grow into confident and self-reliant individuals.
Global Handwashing Day gives us an opportunity to remind our children of something simple but powerful- clean hands can help keep us healthy, and a small habit can make a big difference.
Through this annual program, we hope to keep reinforcing that message until proper handwashing becomes a natural part of everyday life for each of our children.
